Simple steps to ensure your security cameras perform when it matters most

A CCTV system is only as good as its upkeep. We've seen it time and again across Northern Ireland โ a business in Belfast or a farm in County Antrim invests in a quality system, only to discover months later that half the cameras are obscured by grime or the hard drive stopped recording weeks ago. Regular maintenance ensures your system is working when you need it most, and it doesn't require a degree in electronics.
Northern Ireland's climate is not kind to outdoor cameras. Rain, condensation, cobwebs, dust and even bird droppings can gradually degrade image quality. What starts as a slight haze can eventually render a camera almost useless, particularly at night when IR illumination reflects off dirty lens covers.
We recommend cleaning your camera lenses at least every three months โ more frequently if they're positioned near trees or in particularly exposed locations. Use a soft microfibre cloth and a gentle lens cleaning solution. Avoid abrasive materials that could scratch the lens cover. For cameras mounted at height, a telescopic cleaning pole with a soft head works well, or simply give us a call and we'll include it in a maintenance visit.
Loose or corroded connections are one of the most common causes of camera failure, particularly in the damp conditions we experience across Northern Ireland. Check that all external cable connections are properly sealed with weatherproof junction boxes or self-amalgamating tape. Look for any signs of water ingress around cable entry points.
If you notice intermittent camera dropouts โ a camera that works sometimes but not others โ it's almost always a connection issue. PoE (Power over Ethernet) connections can be particularly sensitive to corrosion, as they carry both data and power through the same cable.
Your NVR's hard drive is working constantly, recording footage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Surveillance-grade hard drives (like the Western Digital Purple range) are designed for this workload, but they don't last forever. Most will give you 3โ5 years of reliable service before they need replacing.
Check your NVR's hard drive status regularly through the system menu. Most Hikvision and Dahua NVRs display hard drive health information, including temperature and S.M.A.R.T. data. If you notice the drive running unusually hot, making clicking noises or showing errors, replace it promptly. A failed hard drive means no recorded footage โ which defeats the entire purpose of your system.
Also verify that your system is actually recording. It sounds obvious, but we've attended callouts in Lisburn, Bangor and across Belfast where clients assumed their system was recording, only to discover it had stopped weeks earlier due to a full or failed drive.
Camera and NVR firmware updates aren't just about new features โ they often include critical security patches and bug fixes. Outdated firmware can leave your system vulnerable to cyber attacks, which is a growing concern for internet-connected CCTV systems.
Check for firmware updates every six months. Both Hikvision and Dahua provide updates through their websites, and the process is usually straightforward โ download the file, upload it to your NVR via USB or the web interface, and let it install. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, it's something we cover in our maintenance packages.
Infrared LEDs are what allow your cameras to see in the dark, and they do degrade over time. After 2โ3 years, you may notice that night-time footage isn't as bright or clear as it once was. This is normal โ IR LEDs have a finite lifespan.
Test your night vision regularly by reviewing footage from the early hours of the morning. Compare it to footage from when the system was first installed if possible. If you notice a significant drop in night-time image quality, the camera may need replacing, or you might consider adding supplementary IR illuminators to boost performance.
If you use Hik-Connect, DMSS or another app to view your cameras remotely, test it regularly. Network changes, router updates or ISP modifications can sometimes disrupt remote access without you realising. A quick check once a month ensures you'll be able to connect when it actually matters.
Technology moves quickly in the CCTV industry. If your system is more than 5โ7 years old, it may be worth considering an upgrade. Modern cameras offer dramatically better image quality, smarter AI-powered detection, improved night vision and more reliable remote access than systems from even a few years ago.
Signs it's time to upgrade include: consistently poor image quality despite clean lenses, frequent system crashes or freezes, inability to support remote viewing apps, and analogue cameras that can't match modern IP resolution standards.
