Why the world's leading CCTV manufacturer is our top recommendation for NI businesses

Hikvision is the world's largest manufacturer of video surveillance equipment, and for good reason. With over 15 years of installing CCTV systems across Northern Ireland โ from Belfast city centre retail units to remote farmsteads in County Tyrone โ we've tested virtually every brand on the market. Hikvision consistently delivers the best combination of image quality, reliability and value for money. It's the brand we recommend most often, and the one we trust to protect our own premises.
Their product range covers everything from a basic four-camera home setup to enterprise-grade systems with hundreds of channels. For the vast majority of NI businesses, farms and residential properties, Hikvision offers a solution that fits both the requirement and the budget.
Hikvision organises their IP cameras into three main tiers, each designed for different applications and budgets:
Value Series โ These are Hikvision's entry-level cameras, but don't let that fool you. A Value Series 4MP turret camera delivers sharper images than many competitors' mid-range offerings. They're ideal for small businesses in Lisburn or Bangor looking for reliable coverage without breaking the bank. You get solid build quality, IR night vision up to 30 metres and H.265+ compression to save storage space.
Pro Series โ This is where things get interesting. The Pro range includes AcuSense AI technology, which can distinguish between people, vehicles and other motion. This dramatically reduces false alerts โ no more notifications every time a cat walks past your Derry warehouse at 3am. Pro Series cameras also offer better low-light performance and wider dynamic range for challenging lighting conditions.
Ultra Series โ For clients who need the absolute best, the Ultra range delivers. These cameras feature DarkFighter technology for exceptional low-light performance and are available in resolutions up to 8MP (4K). We typically recommend Ultra Series cameras for critical applications โ car dealership forecourts in Belfast, pharmaceutical warehouses in Craigavon, or high-security sites where image clarity is paramount.
One of Hikvision's most impressive innovations is ColorVu technology. Traditional cameras switch to black-and-white infrared mode at night, which means you lose colour information โ you can't tell whether a suspect was wearing a red or blue jacket. ColorVu cameras use larger sensors and supplemental warm LED lighting to deliver full-colour images around the clock.
We've installed ColorVu cameras at retail parks in Newry, pub car parks in Enniskillen and construction sites across County Armagh. The difference in evidential quality is remarkable. PSNI officers have told us directly that colour night footage significantly improves their ability to identify suspects and secure convictions.
Hikvision's Network Video Recorders (NVRs) are the brains of any system. The two most popular ranges for NI businesses are:
DS-7600 Series โ Available in 4, 8 and 16-channel configurations, these compact NVRs are perfect for small to medium installations. The built-in PoE ports mean you simply plug your cameras directly into the recorder โ no separate PoE switch needed. We install these in shops across Belfast, offices in Lisburn and farmhouses throughout mid-Ulster.
DS-7700 Series โ For larger installations requiring 16 to 32 channels, the 7700 series offers more processing power, additional HDD bays for extended storage and support for higher-resolution cameras. These are our go-to for multi-site businesses, large agricultural operations and commercial premises across Northern Ireland.
For hard drives, we exclusively use Western Digital Purple surveillance-rated drives. Standard desktop HDDs aren't designed for the constant read/write demands of 24/7 CCTV recording. WD Purple drives are optimised for this workload and come with a three-year warranty. We typically recommend 4TB for smaller systems and 6โ8TB for larger installations.
The Hik-Connect app is one of the main reasons our clients love their Hikvision systems. Available for iOS and Android, it lets you view live footage, play back recordings and receive push notifications from anywhere with an internet connection. A farmer in Dungannon can check his calving shed from the mart. A shop owner in Ballymena can review footage while on holiday in Spain.
Setup is straightforward โ we configure it during every installation and walk you through the app before we leave. The SADP (Search Active Devices Protocol) tool handles the initial network configuration, ensuring your cameras are properly secured and accessible only to authorised users.
After installing thousands of systems across Northern Ireland, we've seen what works and what doesn't. Hikvision cameras survive our weather โ and anyone who's experienced a January gale on the Antrim coast knows that's no small feat. Their firmware updates are regular and reliable, their technical support is responsive, and their warranty process is hassle-free.
A typical system for a medium-sized NI business might include six to eight Pro Series cameras with AcuSense, a DS-7608 NVR with a 4TB WD Purple drive, and Hik-Connect configured for the owner's phone. Total cost is often less than businesses expect, and the peace of mind is immediate.
