4K CCTV — cameras with an 8 megapixel sensor — delivers roughly four times the pixel count of a standard 1080p system. That additional resolution matters most in situations where footage needs to be reviewed after an incident: face recognition at a gate, vehicle registration identification in a car park, or monitoring a wide yard with a single camera at a distance. 4K resolution in practice
Resolution alone does not determine image quality. A poorly positioned 4K camera in bad light will produce worse results than a correctly specified 2MP camera in the right location. When we survey a site we assess light levels at different times of day, the distance at which identification is needed, and the coverage angles required. Camera type, lens focal length, IR or white-light illumination, and sensor generation all factor into the specification before the resolution question is even reached.
Where 4K adds genuine value:
- Wide-area coverage — a single 4K camera can cover an area that would previously have required two 2MP cameras, reducing cabling and installation cost.
- Digital zoom after the fact — recorded 4K footage can be cropped significantly and still yield usable identification detail, which matters when reviewing incidents.
- Car parks and vehicle access — 4K sensors with the right lens can capture licence plates at distances where 2MP cameras struggle.
- Large retail areas — a single overhead 4K camera covering a shop floor provides better overview detail than multiple lower-resolution cameras.
AI CCTV: smart detection and alerts
Modern Hikvision and Dahua cameras can classify what they detect rather than simply triggering on any motion. This changes how systems behave in practice and makes remote alerts genuinely useful rather than a constant source of false notifications.
Human and vehicle classification
Camera-level AI distinguishes between a person, a vehicle, and background motion such as trees, rain or animals. Alert notifications sent to your phone can be filtered so you only receive alerts when a person or vehicle is detected — not every time a branch moves in the wind. For farms and rural properties this is significant: a standard motion-triggered system on a farm yard will alert hundreds of times per week on animals, weather and lighting changes.
Perimeter and intrusion detection
Line crossing detection triggers when a person or vehicle crosses a defined virtual boundary in the camera's field of view. Intrusion detection triggers when someone enters or remains in a defined zone. Both rules can be configured with direction sensitivity (one-way crossing only, for example) and time-of-day schedules. These rules run on the camera itself and do not require cloud processing or subscription services.
Smart search
AI-indexed recordings allow you to search footage by event type — "show me all instances where a person entered this zone between 11pm and 6am" — rather than scrubbing through hours of video. On systems with a compatible NVR this works across multiple cameras simultaneously.
Night performance: IR and white-light cameras
Standard infrared cameras produce black-and-white footage in low light. Colour night-vision cameras use a white-light LED combined with a high-sensitivity sensor to produce colour footage even in near darkness. For sites where colour detail matters at night — vehicle colour, clothing identification, or simply more natural-looking footage — white-light or dual-light cameras are now a practical option rather than a premium add-on.
For most farm and rural sites, standard IR cameras remain appropriate. For retail premises, car parks and business entrance points where colour detail matters for incident review, we specify colour night-vision cameras where the budget supports it.
Storage and remote viewing
4K cameras generate larger files than 2MP cameras at equivalent quality settings. Modern NVRs use H.265+ compression which reduces file size significantly without degrading visible quality. A typical 8-camera 4K system with H.265+ recording at sensible quality settings will retain 30 days of continuous footage on a 4TB drive. We size storage for the actual retention period the site requires, not a minimum default.
Every system we install includes remote viewing setup. You can check live cameras, review recordings and receive AI alerts from a phone, tablet or computer. We walk through the app at handover and make sure the remote access is working before we leave the site.
Alarm I/O integration
Many Hikvision and Dahua cameras and NVRs include alarm inputs and relay outputs. These allow CCTV events to trigger external devices — strobes, sounders, electric gate releases — and external devices to trigger recording events. Where this is useful to a site we configure it as part of the installation. We do not imply compatibility with every third-party device and will confirm what is achievable during the survey.
Is 4K right for every site?
Not always. For a straightforward four-camera domestic system covering a driveway and rear garden, a well-specified 2MP or 4MP system from Hikvision or Dahua will deliver results that are indistinguishable in day-to-day use. 4K makes more sense on larger commercial and farm sites, vehicle access points, wide-area monitoring, and anywhere that footage quality for incident review is the primary concern. We recommend the resolution and camera type that suits each specific site — not the most expensive specification available.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need 4K if I already have HD cameras?
- Only if your current system is not giving you the detail you need. If your existing cameras are providing usable identification footage and you have no specific gaps, a like-for-like upgrade to 4K may not be necessary. If you have blind spots, poor night performance or need better detail at distance, 4K combined with better specification is worth discussing.
- Will 4K cameras work with my existing NVR?
- Usually not. 4K IP cameras require an NVR rated for the bandwidth and resolution. Most NVRs from four or more years ago will not process 4K streams correctly. We will advise during the survey whether your existing recorder can support an upgrade or whether a new NVR is needed.
- Do AI alerts require a subscription?
- No. The AI detection on Hikvision and Dahua cameras runs on the camera itself. Push notifications are sent via the manufacturer's app (Hik-Connect or DMSS) at no ongoing cost. No third-party cloud subscription is required for the core alert functionality.
- How does 4K affect my broadband for remote viewing?
- Live remote viewing streams at a lower resolution than the recorded footage — typically 1080p or lower — so broadband requirements for remote viewing are similar to a standard HD system. The NVR records locally at full 4K quality. We set up substreams correctly so remote viewing performance is not degraded.
