Understanding resolution choices for your security system
Technology ยท March 2026 ยท 5 min read
When choosing a CCTV system for your home or business in Northern Ireland, one of the first decisions you'll face is resolution. The two most common options today are 1080p (Full HD) and 4K (Ultra HD). But what do these numbers actually mean for your security, and is the premium for 4K always justified?
A 1080p camera captures images at 1920 ร 1080 pixels โ roughly 2 megapixels. A 4K camera records at 3840 ร 2160 pixels โ approximately 8 megapixels. That's four times the detail. In practical terms, this means you can zoom into 4K footage significantly further without the image becoming pixelated, which can be the difference between identifying a face or just seeing a blurry shape.
For certain applications, 4K resolution is genuinely transformative. If you run a retail shop in Belfast city centre or a busy forecourt in Lisburn, the ability to clearly identify individuals from your footage is essential. 4K cameras excel at capturing facial features, clothing details and distinguishing characteristics that 1080p simply cannot match at distance.
Number plate recognition is another area where 4K shines. Car parks, delivery yards and gated entrances across Northern Ireland benefit enormously from the extra resolution. A 4K camera can reliably read a number plate at 20โ25 metres, whereas a 1080p camera might struggle beyond 10โ12 metres in the same conditions.
Wide-area coverage is also significantly improved. A single 4K camera covering a large warehouse in Derry or a farmyard in County Antrim can replace two or three 1080p cameras, potentially saving on installation costs whilst providing better overall coverage.
That said, 1080p remains an excellent choice for many scenarios. For general surveillance of corridors, stairwells, internal offices and residential driveways, 1080p provides more than enough detail. If your cameras are positioned close to entry points โ within 5โ8 metres โ the resolution difference becomes far less noticeable.
Many of our residential clients across Belfast, Bangor and Newtownards find that a well-positioned 1080p system gives them everything they need. The key is camera placement: a 1080p camera at the right angle and distance will outperform a poorly positioned 4K camera every time.
This is where the practical differences become significant. A 4K camera generates roughly three to four times more data than a 1080p camera. For a typical 8-camera system recording 24/7, you might need a 2TB hard drive for 14 days of 1080p footage, but 6โ8TB for the same period at 4K.
Bandwidth is equally important, particularly for remote viewing. If you're monitoring your cameras from your phone over mobile data, 4K streams will consume significantly more data. Most modern systems handle this by offering a lower-resolution sub-stream for remote viewing whilst recording at full resolution locally, but it's worth understanding the implications for your network.
For businesses in rural Northern Ireland where broadband speeds may be limited, this is a genuine consideration. We always assess your network capabilities during our free site survey to ensure your system performs reliably.
4K cameras typically cost 20โ40% more than their 1080p equivalents. You'll also need a more capable NVR (Network Video Recorder) with greater processing power and larger hard drives. For a complete 8-camera system, the difference might be ยฃ400โยฃ800 depending on the brand and specifications.
However, the gap is narrowing. Manufacturers like Hikvision and Dahua have made 4K increasingly accessible, and we're seeing more clients opt for a mixed approach โ 4K cameras on critical points like entrances and till areas, with 1080p on secondary positions. This gives you the best of both worlds without breaking the budget.
After installing thousands of systems across Northern Ireland, our advice is straightforward: invest in 4K where identification matters most, and use 1080p where general awareness is sufficient. A well-designed mixed system, professionally installed with correct camera positioning, will outperform an all-4K system with poor placement every time.
