Why Remote Monitoring Matters
One of the most common questions we hear from clients across Northern Ireland is: "Can I view my cameras on my phone?" The answer is a resounding yes. uand it's easier than you might think. Whether you're a business owner in Belfast checking your premises after hours, or a farmer in County Tyrone monitoring your calving shed, remote access has become an essential feature of any modern CCTV system.
The Two Main Apps You Need to Know
Hik-Connect (for Hikvision Systems)
If your system uses Hikvision cameras and NVRs. uwhich many of our installations across Northern Ireland do. uyou'll use the Hik-Connect app. It's available free on both iOS and Android. The app allows you to view live feeds from all your cameras, play back recorded footage, receive push notifications when motion is detected and even talk through cameras with built-in speakers.
Setting up Hik-Connect is straightforward. You create a free account, scan the QR code on your NVR (or enter the serial number manually), and add a verification code. Within minutes, you'll have full access to your cameras from anywhere with an internet connection.
DMSS (for Dahua Systems)
For Dahua-based systems, the DMSS app (Dahua Mobile Security Surveillance) provides similar functionality. It's a well-designed app that supports live viewing, playback, push alerts and two-way audio. The setup process mirrors Hik-Connect. uscan the QR code, verify your device and you're connected.
Both apps support multiple sites, so if you manage several properties across Northern Ireland. uperhaps a shop in Lisburn and a warehouse in Craigavon. uyou can switch between them seamlessly within a single app.
P2P Cloud vs Port Forwarding
There are two main methods for connecting your CCTV system to the internet for remote viewing, and understanding the difference matters for both security and reliability.
P2P (Peer-to-Peer) Cloud: This is the method we recommend for most clients. Your NVR connects to the manufacturer's cloud server, and your phone app connects to the same server. The two devices find each other automatically without you needing to configure your router. It's secure, simple and works reliably even if your internet provider changes your IP address.
Port Forwarding: The older method involves opening specific ports on your router to allow direct access to your NVR. While this can offer slightly faster connections, it requires technical knowledge, a static IP address (or dynamic DNS service) and introduces potential security vulnerabilities if not configured correctly. We generally advise against this approach for most users.
Network Requirements
For reliable remote viewing, your CCTV system needs a stable internet connection. Here's what we recommend:
- Upload speed: At least 2 Mbps for smooth remote viewing of one or two cameras simultaneously. For viewing multiple cameras at once, 5 Mbps or more is ideal.
- Router quality: A decent router makes a significant difference. For business premises, we often recommend TP-Link Omada managed access points for reliable, consistent connectivity.
- Wired connection: Your NVR should always be connected to your router via an Ethernet cable, not WiFi. This ensures the most stable connection for both recording and remote access.
In rural parts of Northern Ireland where broadband can be limited, we work with clients to optimise their system settings. ureducing sub-stream resolution and bitrate to ensure smooth remote viewing even on slower connections.
Mobile Data vs WiFi Viewing
You can view your cameras on both WiFi and mobile data, but there are practical differences. On WiFi, you'll typically get smoother, higher-quality streams. On mobile data (4G/5G), the experience depends on your signal strength and data allowance.
Both Hik-Connect and DMSS automatically adjust stream quality based on your connection speed. You can also manually select between main stream (full quality) and sub-stream (lower quality, less data) depending on whether you need to see fine detail or just check that everything looks normal.
A typical live viewing session uses approximately 1โ3 MB per minute on sub-stream, so even a modest mobile data plan will handle regular check-ins without issue.
Push Notifications and Smart Alerts
Perhaps the most valuable feature of remote monitoring is push notifications. Both apps can send instant alerts to your phone when motion is detected, with a snapshot of what triggered the alert. Modern systems with AI detection (like Hikvision's AcuSense) can filter these alerts to only notify you about people or vehicles, dramatically reducing false alarms from animals, shadows or headlights.
You can customise notification schedules. ufor example, only receiving alerts outside business hours. uand set specific detection zones within each camera's view. This level of control means you're informed when it matters without being overwhelmed by unnecessary notifications.
Getting Set Up
When Titan Surveillance installs your system, we configure remote access as part of the installation and walk you through the app on your phone before we leave. We ensure everything is working perfectly and that you're comfortable using it. If you have an existing system that isn't set up for remote viewing, we can often add this capability. ugive us a ring on 028 92 013 082 and we'll talk you through your options.
